Early 20th Century Cast-Iron & Wood Barn Pulley by Louden
c. 1900-1920s; Louden Machinery Co., Fairfield, IA
Cast-iron and wood barn pulley marked "Louden" and model "A23." This rugged utility device reflects Louden's legacy in revolutionizing farm productivity with their hay-carrier systems and industrial monorail equipment.
The pulley features a solid, grooved wooden wheel encased in a robust cast-iron yoke-stamped with clear maker identification and a design accommodating heavy rope and barn use. Aged patina blankets the iron-softly rusted and time-worn-while the wooden sheave shows surface wear and compression from decades of service. Overall, this piece embodies turn-of-the-century American industrial agricultural craftsmanship.
The pulley has cosmetic aging throughout, with surface rust and finish wear to the iron frame and visible rope wear to the wooden wheel. Despite these time-earned abrasions, the wheel turns freely and the piece remains structurally sound.
